- János Szépvölgyi was appointed to director - of the Institute of Materials and Environmental Chemistry Chemical Research Center - for five more years by József Pálinkás, President of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, on December 15, 2008.
- The scientists' general assembly supported the proposal of János Szépvölgyi as a candidate for the position of Director of the Institute of Materials and Environmental Chemistry CRC HAS by 100% of the votes at its meeting on October 30, 2008.
- From Népszabadság, October 31, 2008 issue: According to the results of the research group of the Institute of Materials and Environmental Chemistry Chemical Research Center lead by Klára Szentmihályi, the bioavailability of essential metals, like iron, in the human organism is higher from a pectin complex form than from an inorganic compound. The outcome of this finding is a pill called Ferrocomp, produced by In Vitro Ltd. containing not only iron but also other metals and vitamins.
- Nano and micro particles that are able to bind protein based medicine and are suitable to deliver them into the human organism were manufactured at the Institute of Materials and Environmental Chemistry of the Chemical Research Center. These composite particles, after entering the body, can cause a well defined and long term release of the medicine. Animal tests proved that the active ingredient, either it is built in a pill or is dissolved in injection, enters the bloodstream and is able to cause the desired therapeutic effect.
